The Al(C2H3O2)3 has 2 oxygen but in it is in a set of parentheses with a subscript of 3.

 

This means there are 2 x3 = 6 oxygen

Since polyatomic ions have a groups of atoms that share electrons, they are like covalent compounds. However, since they also contain extra electrons or a deficit of electrons, they are also like ionic compounds.
