Chemistry Terms

Atom
the smallest part of any substance and the periodic table of elements lists the atoms
Nucleus
the center of an atom, it contains protons and neutrons
Atomic Number
provides the number of protons and electrons in an atom
Atomic Mass
based on the number of protons and neutrons in an atom
Proton
positively charged particle of an atoms that is found in the nucleus
Neutron
particle with 0 charge and is found in the nucleus of an atom
Electron
negatively charged particle found in energy clouds that surround the nucleus
Photon
packet of light energy given off when an electron falls back to a lower energy level in an atom
Stable Atom
all electrons are in the lowest possible energy levels
Excited Atom
atom that has electrons that have jumped to higher energy levels
Period
horizontal rows of the periodic table
Group
vertical columns of the periodic table
Isotope
atom that has gained or lost neutrons
Compound
two or more elements chemically combined
Mixture
substances that are physically combined
Solution
mixture with one substance dissolved in another
Soluble
able to be dissolved
Dilute
small amount of solute present in the solution
Saturated
solution is 100% full and no more solute can be dissolved at that temperature
Solubility
amount of solute needed for saturation at a certain temperature
Suspension
a mixture of particles that are not dissolved and they can be separated
Colloid
suspension that has small particles that remain mixed
