Chemistry Test Flashcard

What is the definition of Valence electrons?
In chemistry, valence electrons are the outermost electrons of an atom, which are important in determining how the atom reacts chemically with other atoms. The maximum amount of valence electrons is eight, it can’t go any higher than that.
What is the definition of the Nucleus?
The central and most important part of an object, movement, or group, forming the basis for its activity and growth
What is the definition of the Electron Cloud?
An atomic orbital is a mathematical function that describes the wave-like behavior of either one electron or a pair of electrons in an atom. Outside of the nucleus, where the electrons are found.
What is the definition of an element?
A part or aspect of something,
What is a chemical change?
During a chemical change, substances are changed into different substances. (Changes chemical make-up)
What is a physical change?
The change from one state (gas, liquid or solid) to another.(Doesn’t change chemical make-up)
What is a metal?
A substance with high electrical conductivity, luster, and malleability, which readily loses electrons to form positive ions. Found on the left of the Periodic Table
What is a non-metal?
One of the elements which do not exhibit metallic properties. Found on the right of the Periodic Table
What are metalloids?
An element with properties intermediate between those of a metal and nonmetal. Found in the middle of the Periodic Table
What is luster?
Luster of a mineral is the way its surface reflects light.
What is the definition of being malleable?
Capable of being shaped.
What is ductile?
Ductile is a physical property of a material associated with their ability to be hammered thin or stretched into wire without breaking.
Why is it important for us to know how to balance equations?
It’s important because you are usually interested in finding of how efficient your processes are. Matter can be neither be created or destroyed, it only can be changed
What are some important components of a qualitative analysis?
A qualitative analysis is detailed.
What are the following substances, and how do you find their number?
Energy Levels-
Protons- Same as the atomic number
Electrons- Same as the atomic number
Neutrons- The atomic number subtracted by the atomic mass.
Energy Levels- The row the element is found.
What are some key differences between metals, nonmetals and metalloids?
Metals are shiny, nonmetals are not, and metalloids might.
