Element
Cannot be broken down; the smallest unit of matter
Compound
two or more different elements chemically combined
Homogeneous

The same throughout

Used to describe uniform mixtures

Heterogeneous

Varied composition;

describes mixtures that are not uniform

Heat of Fusion
Energy required to melt (or freeze) a substance at it’s melting point
Heat of vaporization
Energy required to vaporize (or condense) a substance at it’s boiling point
Physical Property

A characteristic of a substance that can be observed without having to change the substance:

Examples: color, odor, phase, texture, density, boiling point, solubility

Chemical Property
A characteristic of a substance that can be observed if the substance reacts chemically
