Second column, reactive, not usually found freely in earth, charge of +2, form bonds with nonmetals
Transition metals
D-block, varying charges, behave as metals, form ionic bonds with nonmetals
Metalloids
Semi-conductors, have properties of both metals and nonmetals, varying charges, form covalent bonds with both metals and nonmetals
Halogens
Very reactive, form both ionic and covalent bonds , charge of -1
